Happy Socks - Using Clothing to Support Sacred Space

Sometimes the best practices are the ones we stumble upon.

One of the women in my Monthly Planning Ritual call was telling a story about an in-home creativity retreat that she took when her retreat house got snowed in. She excitedly told us about her candle, and the special food and…her happy clothes.

Happy clothes?!?

Being who we really are can be tricky.  Especially if who we are clashes with society, or with how our family and acquaintances see us, or simply feels too tender to share with anyone outside of our intimate circles.

I feel you.

PTA meetings and other school functions, dinners for my husband’s business, even just socializing with friends or other couples has, in the past (and sometimes even now) sent me into such anxious state that I spend an afternoon agonizing over whether I’ll go or not.

I am happy to report: it gets better.

A Farewell Ritual Among the Trees

We’re planning a farewell ritual for one of our Brooklyn Group who is headed to Colorado soon.  She’s a challenge  – she doesn’t really like keepsakes and lives a very uncluttered lifestyle (so, the exact opposite of most of the group!)

As such, we wanted to give her something that wouldn’t take up room in the car on the long drive, but that she could still have as a constant reminder of our love and presence as she starts on this latest leg of her journey.

So we gave her trees!

In the same way that animals have symbolic meaning, so do plants and trees.  I found this lovely little website that gives all the Celtic meanings of the trees.

Here's how ritual can help you move gently from one month to another...

I just got done leading another of the Virtual Business Retreats that I’ve been doing every couple of months with these great groups of women.

I mentioned how I’ve been feeling pinched in my dreaming and envisioning lately, how everything I think up goes crashing into a mental brick wall with the words YEAH, BUT written on it.

They all seemed to know exactly what I was talking about.

What Starbucks Understands About Ritual

A few years back Starbucks had a marketing campaign for the holidays centered around ritual.   It was a pretty effective campaign.

Starbucks recognized the need we have deep down in ourselves for special time – time outside of ordinary time, intentional time.  They played on the longing to meet with something more, be it our inner heart or the Divine or deep connections with others.

There’s precious little of that going around these days if we’re looking for it in our coffee chains.

But what if we were to claim that for ourselves?

A friend of mine is celebrating an anniversary this week, except it isn’t really an event to celebrate.

Really what she’s doing is honoring a milestone in an on-going process.

In our culture we’re big on the yearly anniversary but in other cultures (like the Celtic traditions) it’s the quest of a year and a day that holds real power.
