A friend of mine is celebrating an anniversary this week, except it isn’t really an event to celebrate.
Really what she’s doing is honoring a milestone in an on-going process.
In our culture we’re big on the yearly anniversary but in other cultures (like the Celtic traditions) it’s the quest of a year and a day that holds real power.
Here’s what I mean:
In Watership Down where the rabbits couldn’t count past four, five became mystical – a symbol of infinity.
In Judaism, 8 is a mystical number (the day when a bris is held) because the world was created in a week, seven days, and so 8 begins the cycle again.
Or in the words of Matisyahu “Eight is the number of infinity/ one more that you know.”
And it’s that “one more than you know” that’s vital to an ongoing process, whether it’s recovery, a 12 step program, continued heath after the anniversary of a diagnosis, or just pure emotional growth.
It’s the hope and the wish that it’ll continue.
It’s the “more, please.”
Bright Blessings on your own journey of a year and a day!
