Using Ritual to Rewrite Your Novel (weeks 5 & 6: when very little gets done)

Sick days, self-care, and what counts in staying connected to your project.  All of these came up over the last two weeks.

We do what we can, right?  We hold onto the thread as best we can.  Sometimes it slides through our fingers and we just barely keep a hold.

And it's okay.

It has to be okay, because it is what it is, and no amount of fighting against that is ever going to change it.  So, I practice going with it.  Some call it Acceptance.  Some call it Surrender.  Call it what you will, just practice....

I had a horrible case of laryngitis during "weekend" 5.

I don't like not being able to talk but I made the best of it.  I spent the day on Thursday exploring living with "No words" and what that means.  No words from me.  No words from books,  No words from my stories on the TV.

I am glad after that experience that it is not the will of the Universe that "I speak no more; that my voice be still" as Leonard Cohen wrote.  I offer you the song in its fullness and beauty, as sung by the Webb sisters.

Theresa Ramirez, I Slay My Own Dragons
Sick days mean catch-up at work, even when you run your own business.  So "weekend" 6 was dedicated to my precious La Padre.

But I DID connect with two writers! Because part of developing a Writerly Self is connecting with other writers!

First up was Theresa who launched a brilliant and bold new website on November 1st!  I'm a sucker for retellings (um, hello...Maggie's story is a retelling of the Christ tale after all!) and Theresa is doing it with cleverness and a desire to empower women and girls.  Read her stuff: start with Red Riding Hood - so apropos for this time of year!
Camino Stamp Jennifer Hofmann
And then I got to talk to Jen about process, and publishing, and sticking with it!  You can read about Jen's pilgrimage journey on the Camino over at her bog to tide you over until she's done working on her book, detailing the experience.

Personally, I can't wait.  But I must.

Because, as I said when I started this post, it is what it is, and no amount of fighting against that is ever going to change it.  So, I'm practicing.

And next week is a new week.  The Universe is already sending me messages to keep the faith and, as Sheila says each week in The Round TUIT Writing Circle "Just keep starting."

Using Ritual to Rewrite Your Novel (weekend four: middles aren't sexy)

My kids seem to think I'm a badass. These were my birthday gifts back in February. That's Carol, from The Walking Dead who is by far the baddest badass on the show to date. The plaque is from my daughter and says,

"She slept with wolves without fear for the wolves knew a lion was among them."

And all this badass-ery is good because entering "weekend" 4 of the process, and I'm entering the middle of the rewrite process.

OK, the *start* of the middle but still the middle.

And middles are not sexy.

There's no rush of completion in the middle. There's not the joyful energy of beginning (or beginning again.) The Likes from that first week are dwindling, my cheerleaders quieter now. No one's writing sonnets (or very many blog posts even) about the middle.

Yes, I am entering the middle, or the slog as I call it, and it's not sexy. Just necessary.

And just the time that one needs to find her inner badass in order to make it through. ‪#‎WritersLife ‪#‎MaggieAndChristian ‪#‎MiddlesAreNOTsexy ‪#‎BadAss

By using ritual to edit and rewrite the starting is easier
"Weekend" 3 and the starting is easier.

That's the beauty of editing and rewriting with ritual.

I DID pop over to Google to find that lovely image of David Tennant's lovely face telling me I should write and I found ALL OF THESE! You've got everything from Loki, to two Doctors, to my boys from Supernatural, to my favorite today...the bloody Queen of England.

So, off I go...smiling.

I'll check in later on page count. Wish me luck! ‪#‎WritersLife

A good deal of editing, and writing for that matter, seems to be reminding myself of what it is NOT time for.

It is not time to fiddle with plot. That comes after I've written out all of the scenes in a list, and after I do some pre-writing. (This is true because I have chosen to follow The Weekend Novelist Rewrites The Novel and if there's one edict we follow in this house it is "trust your chosen paid professionals.")

Telling myself this is a relief because I don't actually know yet how to fix what needs improving and if I were to allow myself to dwell on that I'd derail the whole process.

Using Ritual to Rewrite Your Novel (week two: renegotiating)

Last week I started the editing process of my novel with the intention of working on it every Thursday and Friday. I was SO EXCITED.

Then I looked at the calendar. Thursday and Friday are booked up with kid stuff this week - one trip to look at a college and one trip to Comic Con. Good stuff but it messes up my commitment to myself.

Dammit.

The following are a series of Facebook posts detailing the process and journey of rewriting my Beloved Story.
October 1st, 2015

So, here's the deal. (Warning: LONG post ahead)

I finished a first draft of my beloved story back in the summer of 2014. Its very first readers took a gentle look & offered some advice (and from my friend, the college professor, quite a few grammatical corrections.)
Picture
It has been "resting" ever since.

I relaunched the website, got my footing under me business-wise, got Jake Bar Mitzvah-ed. I discovered just the book I needed to edit in a truly constructive way.

My story has been whispering to me, though.

Today is the day that I answer. Today I begin.

Begin what? And how?
