How to Make an Altar

Here's how you create a personal altar in 3 easy steps.  (And here's why you want to!!)

Step 1: Find a place for it.
Do you have:

• A corner on your desk?
• A space on a bookshelf?
• An end table?

• A mantle?
• A window sill?
• A tray? 
• A small chest with a flat top?
• Or my favorite, the top of a short bookshelf?

Make sure it’s someplace where it won’t get (easily) swamped with clutter.  Preferably somewhere you’ll see it often (without it being open to criticism from those who might not understand.)

Step 2: Choose what kind of an altar you want.
Do you need:

• A family altar?
• A business altar?
• An intention altar?
• A spiritual altar?
• A meditation altar?
  

Step 3: Choose symbols that support the type of altar you’ve chosen.

Begin with a pretty cloth, doily, vesica piscis, or a tray to delineate space. (Omit this step if you’re working with a small space like a window sill)

I almost always add a candle for Spirit.

Add objects that have symbolic meaning and that support the intention of your altar.  Choosing symbols is a very personal thing so put some thought into it.

Voila!  A personal altar, tailored to your needs, adding support and beauty to your little corner of the world.
